As a global company, Assurant observes Black History Month around the world to raise awareness and promote understanding, while also supporting our employees who advocate for change, challenge discrimination and promote a diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce.

Earlier this year we recognised Black History Month in the U.S. and Canada, dedicated to recognising and celebrating the history and achievements of Black and African Americans and Canadians. It was also a time to reflect on the challenges they have faced throughout history and continue to confront today. Other countries where Assurant has offices, such as the UK and the Netherlands, observe Black History Month in October.

The origins of Black History Month observances in the U.S. can be traced to Carter G. Woodson who is known as the “Father of Black History.” In 1912, he was the second African American to earn a PhD from Harvard. In 1925, Dr Woodson initiated the creation of what we now call Black History Month and chose February because it coincided with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and of Frederick Douglass on February 14. Both were dates that black communities in the U.S. had celebrated together since the late 19th century.

Donations to Social Justice Anti-Racism Charitable Organisations

Fighting against racism and supporting social justice requires action by individuals, communities, charitable partners and the business sector. It’s critical to deepening the levels of understanding, engagement and actions aligned with Assurant’s values and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Assurant and the Assurant Foundation are proud to support several charities and organisations including those focused on African American and Black communities. This support includes providing charitable grants and volunteer support aligned to our Assurant Foundation focus area of “Inspiring: We encourage and prepare diverse talent and innovative leaders for the future.”

And as we recognise the importance and spirit of giving back to strengthen communities worldwide we encourage our colleagues to:

  • Consider donating to a cause that focuses on social justice and anti-racism and requesting an employee match from the Assurant Foundation.
  • Check out the many virtual volunteering opportunities available to help others in the community.

More information on the actions we’re taking can be found in our 2021 Social Responsibility Report. Please click here to find out more.
