Below, one of our Business Development Managers, Semmie Onojaife, shares his experience on the sales team and what you might want to know before you apply.

What brought you to Gartner?

I was introduced to Gartner by a member of the University Recruiting team, who reached out to me via LinkedIn. I knew I was ready for a new professional challenge, so I interviewed for the position and started as an Account Manager in September 2019. After my first year, I received a promotion and became a Business Development Manager. I am now fully focused on bringing in new business for the company. Gartner provides associates the opportunities and resources to expand their skills and grow, which has helped me advance my career.

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far at Gartner?

Within my first year of working at Gartner, I was able to hit Winner’s Circle. Gartner’s Winner’s Circle celebrates the key achievements of the top performing Gartner sales professionals. My motivation came from the understanding that we are a results-driven organisation. This challenged me to push myself and hit the circle within my first year. It is always a helpful reminder knowing that here at Gartner, everyone understands we are all connected. We each play a critical role in our collective success. This means that when we win, we do it as a team. Success involves a lot of hard work, but then comes the laughter and the celebrations.

What does success look like on Gartner’s sales team?

Gartner sales associates earn a competitive base salary, uncapped commission and exceptional benefits. We are also big believers in upskilling, so our sales associates also have access to a world-class training programme. Training like this provides our associates with the tools needed to succeed in their roles and hone durable skills. Gartner likes to reward the top performers, so this serves as a further incentive to be at the top of your game. If you’re coachable, persistent, visionary, and looking to make your next career move, then Gartner’s sales team may be right for you.

What does diversity in the workplace mean for you?

Although I only worked in the office for a few months before we began working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, I was able to see that Gartner fully embraces diversity, equity and inclusion. Gartner has a culture of inclusion, belonging, well-being, and growth, leading to limitless growth for all associates. At Gartner, all associates also have the opportunity to join four voluntary, associate-driven employee resource groups (ERGs) which support leadership development, host events, influence benefits, raise awareness, develop workplace resources and drive employee engagement. Our four ERGs are Women at Gartner, Veterans at Gartner, Pride at Gartner, and Mosaic at Gartner.

What career advice do you have for individuals in the BYP network?

I was able to hit Winners Circle and get promoted after just one year of working at Gartner. Therefore, I would recommend that you work hard and embrace your differences. Recognize that when individuals from different backgrounds and experiences join together, we collectively can grow and innovate.
